Hi everyone,
One of the biggest struggles I faced when changing my location was finding a way to expel energy in the form of working-out or participating in daily movement and activities. I find that achieving consistent 30 minutes/day for 5-7 days/week of activity is essential for getting better sleep, having more energy, and maintaining a better mood overall. Whether you work 12 hour days, manage a large household, or have recently moved to a new environment like me, it is important to prioritize your wellbeing, but it can also be incredibly challenging. Here are my suggestions for tackling ways to feel good about your holistic health:
1.Find Your Movement
The first thing I recommend is to find an activity that works well with your body. What movements feel good versus what cause pain will be different everyone. For me, yoga has become my go-to because each yoga movement leaves me feeling relaxed but also strong and balanced. I highly recommend yoga for people who need to occasionally wind-down your mental energy, but also want to work on body flexibility and critical breathing techniques that help with managing stress, anger, and anxiety. However, many people prefer weight lifting, hiking, cycling, dance classes, team sports - either way, it is important to recognize your fitness and mental health goals and see what movements and activities align with these.
2.Join a Community
Secondly, I recommend joining a group or inviting friends to participate with you when you complete this activity. Accountability is so important for achieving your goals. When others are counting on you to show up and spend time with them, it makes the task much more likely to achieve together. For me, this looks like going to the gym with my partner consistently or participating in yoga classes where I meet new friends and work together to achieve our goals. Additionally, you can look at a site like Meetup that offers a opportunities to meet new people while you enjoy a nice walk, yoga or meditation session, or running events.
3.Prioritize Yourself
This is probably the hardest step to consistently accomplish, but it is the most important. Make sure to carve out at least 30 minutes everyday, preferably in the morning before responsibilities kick in, to reset your body and mind and show yourself some love. I know how busy life can get because everyday is different, but making this self-investment sets the tone for a more positive day. Finding what makes your holistic self feel good and consistently prioritizing it can completely change your mood, energy levels, and overall sense of well-being.
I know this is a difficult process, but I hope these steps help guide you towards the best ways to keep your heart pumping and your mind racing. I am excited to see the positive impact that daily movement has on your lives.
Best,
Hailey
